How much filament does a class need?

Every class is different, but these numbers are close enough to budget with. They assume 0.4 mm nozzles, 15 to 20% infill and standard PLA.

Rule of thumbWhat that means for ordering
One student project20 to 40 g, so a 1kg roll covers roughly 25 to 50 projectsPlan one roll per class per project, in the colour the kids pick
One printer, running most days1 to 2 rolls a monthKeep a spare black and a spare white next to every printer
A lab of 10 printers15 to 20 rolls a monthOrder 20 at a time: the per-roll discount kicks in and shipping is free
A board-wide orderHundreds of rolls, several schoolsSend us the list and the addresses and we quote it as one order, shipped where you need it

Questions from teachers and purchasing

Do you accept purchase orders?

Yes, from Canadian schools, boards, colleges, universities, libraries and municipalities. Email hello@filaments.ca to set up a vendor account, then send POs to the same address. Card payment online is always available if that is faster.

Can we get one quote for several schools?

Yes. Send the full list with each school's address and we will quote it as one order and ship each school its share.

Which filament is safest for a classroom?

PLA. It is plant-based, prints at low temperatures and has very little odour. EconoFil PLA and Select PLA are both PLA. We suggest keeping ABS and ASA for enclosed printers with filtration, like the Adventurer 5M Pro or Creator 5 Pro, in a ventilated room.

Will your spools fit our printers?

All our filament is 1.75 mm on standard 1 kg spools, which fit every common desktop printer. For Bambu Lab AMS units, choose Select (rigid plastic spool) or a plastic-spool variant of EconoFil.

What if a roll is defective?

Tell us within 30 days of delivery and we replace it at no charge. Unopened rolls can be returned within 30 days. Details are on the returns page.

Who do I call when a print fails?

Us. 1-844-465-7684, Monday to Thursday 10 to 4:30 and Friday 10 to 4 Eastern, or hello@filaments.ca. The temperature guide has settings for every material we sell.

How much does a print cost, and which filament should we buy?

Use the print cost calculator: put in the grams your slicer reports and it shows filament, electricity and a failure allowance per print and per class set. For a longer answer on which PLA to buy, how many rolls a lab goes through and how to get it through purchasing, read The Best 3D Printer Filament for Schools in Canada.
